Migrate content by using import/export

The import/export feature is based on the new Content Migration APIs. With import/export, you can migrate either subsites or entire site collections, and you can import a subsite into an existing site collection. Like the Smigrate.exe utility in the previous version, import/export requires that the site you import to already exists. Note that import/export does not include some site settings, such as Recycle Bin state and alerts.

To use import/export to migrate a site or site collection, use the following process:

1.

Export the subsite or site collection by using the following command:
c:\program files\common files\microsoft shared\web server extensions\12\bin\stsadm.exe

Stsadm.exe -o export -url <URL> -includeusersecurity

2.

In Central Administration, on the Manage Content Databases page, set to offline all databases except the one that currently contains the subsite or site collection.

3.

Create a blank site or site collection to contain the content you are importing.

4.

Import the subsite or site collection by using the following command:

Stsadm.exe -o import -url <URL> -includeusersecurity

The includeusersecurity parameter specifies that you want to import the security settings for the subsite or site collection. If you do not need the security settings, you can omit this parameter.

OR

Migrate a site collection by using backup/restore

If you want to migrate an entire site collection, you can do so by using the backup and restore operations with the Stsadm.exe command-line tool. First, back up the site collection you want to move, then delete it from the current database and take the database offline. Then, restore the site collection to the new URL. Be sure that there is no site collection already at the new location, or the restore operation will fail.

If there is a site collection at the destination and you want to overwrite it, you can use the overwrite parameter with the restore operation.

To use backup/restore to migrate a site collection, use the following process:

1.

Back up the site collection by using the following command:

Stsadm.exe -o backup -url <URL> -filename <filename.dat>

2.

In Central Administration, on the Manage Content Databases page, set to offline the database that currently contains the site collection.

3.

Restore the site collection by using the following command:

stsadm.exe -o restore -url <URL> -filename <filename.dat>

4.

In Central Administration, on the Manage Content Databases page, set to online the database that originally contained the site collection.

Okay, this one took me a while to figure out, but nonetheless I found it and will share it.

In order to turn off or disable the MySite or MyLinks functionality you need to be an Sharepoint administrator.

Go to the Central Administration Web Page
Click on the link for Shared Services Administration
--If you have more than one SSP, select the one that is running the MySites functionality
Under "User Profiles and My Sites" click Personalization Services Permissions

Select the group you want to limit the functionality for.  More than likely you will just have NTAuthority\Authenticated Users.

In the next screen you will see a list of checkboxes,
--To disable MySites uncheck "Create Personal Site"
--To disable MyLinks uncheck "Use Personal Features"

I spotted the Google street view car at Baja Fresh in Sunnyvale during lunch today. It's amazing that they have million of dollars of equipment in this modified beat-up mini van. They take so many high resolution images that they have to swap out terabyte of hard drives every other day or so.

Check out this utility for Windows Vista that has been on the MAC.

Expose is an application on Mac OSX that tiles all the open windows with the press of a key, letting you quickly choose between them. Now there is finally a Mac OSX Expose clone application for Windows Vista that runs great! Not only that, but it’s open source, so you can improve it if you wanted to.

To install this application, you’ll have to run the setup application as well as the Visual C++ redistributable package, unless you have visual studio installed, which you probably don’t.

I always wanted some kind of dgital photo display in the family but they are very expensive and does not have wireless capability. I have an old laptop that has been laying around but could only run Windows 98. It is perfect for this project.

This is my requirement:
- Old laptop
- Painting frame. I recommend the RIBBA picture frame from Ikea because it is thick in size
- Boot into Windows
- Connect to the network via WIFI
- Access network share on remote server where pictures are stored
- Launch screen saver to display rotating pictures

Ribba picture frame. There are different sizes so pick one best fit your laptop LCD.
P1050454.JPG

Confgure the laptop and make sure that everything works and behave the way you want it to after you hung it on your wall.
I run Windows 98 on this old laptop. To login to Windows with the network domain account, I use TweakUI from Microsoft to do the job.
To initiate the screensaver automatically after windows boot, I use Macro Express program to execute it. I also installed RealVNC remote control just in case I need to make minor changes remotely.

Looks like everything is working the way I want it to. Now time to strip the laptop of its casing. I got rid of everything that I don't need like the battery, floppy and CD-Rom drives, modem and speaker. The only crucial components are the main boards, LCD, HDD, PCMCIA card tray.

Now cut out the hole in the board that came with the Ribba picture frame for the LCD. I centered the LCD on the board and outlined it with a pencil. Then I use the dremel tool to cut the hole. Do not cut the hole too big. You want the LCD to fit snuggly.

Before I move on, I want to test it out. It still works. As you can see, it is coming together nicely.

I picked up a piece of poster board from Michael's, the local craft store, to make the border. Cut out the display opening.

The laptop guts are very light so I resorted to using duct tape to mount the whole thing behind the picture frame.

And here is the completed DIY wall mount photo display. The wire you see here is the power cable but at least it is wireless and I could update the pictures easily on the remote server. Cost? An old laptop, $10.00 for the picture frame and poster board and a weekend.

Are you sick and tire of looking for your programs under the All Program groups because they are out of aphabetical order? This utility gives you the ability to automatically sort the "Programs" folder on the Start menu as well as the "Favorites" folder. The program is added to the Run section of the Registry and will perform a sort each time a user logs on.. I'm not sure why MS did not built this feature into Windows XP.

Want to enhence your Windows experience? Try these PowerToys from microsoft. These are the ones I like the most.

Image Resizer:
Are you sick of launching the bloated Adobe Photoshop just to resize an image on your dekstop? Just right click on the image file and select "Resize Picktures". You could choose the preselected size or customize your own.

ALT-TAB Replacement:
Try this new ALT-TAB to switch your running applications. Instead of showing you just the icons for the application, it shows you the application window. This one is cool.

I have multiple devices such as Xbox and Tivo that need network access. Buying an individual wireless game adapter for them is not an option and costly. I have a spare Linksys WRT54G wireless broadband router laying around and want to make the most of it. I scoured the Intetnet and found a hacked firmware that turns the router into a four port wireless Ethernet bridge. The site http://www.dd-wrt.com. A very good step by step setup here. But you could download dd-wrt v23 below. This zip file includes the bin file for different WRT54G model out there. The setup was very simple. This is what I did.

33f594066a59a60a-1bc4ec8-10a3d9e2f6e-50171603173436.jpg

1. It is best to reset the config back to factory default by holding down the reset button in the back. Access the WRT54G console with a web browser at 192.168.1.1 admin/admin and go to Upgrade Firmware.
2. Select browse and choose the bin file for your WRT54G model and click upgrade firmware.
3. After the router is rebooted, access the admin console and click on Basic Setting.
4. Choose Client Bridged Wireless Mode. For Wireless Network Mode you could use Mixed, B or G-Only.
5. Enter the SSID of the AP that the WRT54G will be connected to. Remember, the WRT54G is no longer an access point. It is a client to your existing access point.
6. That it. The rest if just basic router settings that you should already know.

I don't think so. Apparently it was a misprint Fry's Electronic ads. I'd pick one up in a heartbeat at that price.

WOW! This thing is gorgeous. Think of it as having a full blown PC in your dashboard. I wonder how much it will cost when it comes to our shore. I'm willing to give up a limb for this.

I mentioned to my co-worker that I want to setup a dual LCD side by side for my PC but the 19" LCDs are so expensive. He mentioned slickdeals.net sometime post deals on Dell's UltraSharp LCDs. Bam!!! There it was. Dell had two thoudsand 20" UltraSharp wide screen on sale at $440.00 each from roughly $650.00. These monitors are sharp and quality is top notch. I snatched up two and got the setup I'd always wanted. They showed up right on my birthday too.

My wait was finally over when I found out the black market phone shops got the Sony Ericsson K750i mobile phone in stock. Although I had one month left on my Cingular contract, I switched over to T-mobile anyway to get this phone for free and keep my number. I'm telling you, this phone kicks ass.

It has a 2MP digital camera, an awesome MP3 player, accepts up to 1GB memory stick duo pro, bluetooth, infrared, tri-band and many features. I had to retire my SE K700i.

dsc00014.jpg (467.26 KB) was the acutal picture taken by this phone.
